Abstract: The peculiarities of Bryusov’s short stories are studied basing on the story «Defense». The analysis of the narrative structure of this story shows ironically Bryusov’s rethinking of different author’s works (A. Pushkin and Au. Villiers de l’Isle-Adam), while the game with truth and falsehood remains within the subtext.
