Abstract: The article is devoted to the novel of G. P. Block «Loneliness», published in Leningrad in 1929. Georgy Petrovich Block (1888–1962) was a cousin of great Russian poet Alexander Blok, philologist, writer and translator. He belonged to a generation of people whose fate changed dramatically after the 1917 revolution. This injury is realized in the fate of the hero of the novel, a talented mathematician Evgraf Aleksandrovich Batenin, who fell off the swing in his childhood and became a hunchback. In the artistic fabric of the novel bodily harm hides inner beauty, ugly is only the tragic death of the hero. The article shows the relationship of prose by G. P. Block and Russian classical literature (Puschkin, Chekhov) and with writers-contemporaries (Pilnyak, Dobychin).

Keywords: ugliness, beauty, realism, symbolism, teratology, a monstrosity
