Abstract: This article reveals the life of Vasily Petrovich Kranogorskiy (1892–1919). A student of the Petrograd university, promising Pushkin scholar, participant of Vengerov’s Pushkin seminar, Kranogorskiy is still mentioned in philological studies, mainly as a university friend of such prominent persons, as Yury Tynyanov or poet Georgiy Maslov. In 1918 the academic life in postrevolutionary Petrograd dramatically collapsed, and then Krasnogorskiy escaped to white Siberia, where under the rule of Kolchak the Tomsk university gave a shelter for many other scholars from the European part of Russia. In Siberia Kranogorskiy published for the first time only several poems and issued almanac "Elan’" (1919). He died suddenly from typhus (rickettsiosis) on the very eve of the fall of white Siberia, so the major details of his biography still remain unclear, including even reliable date and place of his birth. This article contains Kranogorskiy’s letters to his fiancée, then his wife Lidia Ivanovna (nee Dudkina, 1895–1988), preserved in the Dudkins family private archive (one of the publishers, Vera Anisimova, belongs to this family). In addition to the letters of Krasnogorskiy himself, other epistolary materials from the same private archive are also published, including the letters of Elena Tager (the widow of Georgiy Maslov and fellow student of L. Krasnogorskaya at Bestuzhevsky courses (Women’s higher education institution in St. Petersburg), and Siberian poetess, later a prominent Soviet linguist Elena Bakhmutova. For the comments on these epistolary materials, data from several regional state archives (primarily archival funds of the Petrograd and Tomsk universities) are also involved. There are several key themes in the letters of Krasnogorskiy, including such as: epistolary etiquette of Russian philology students in early 20 century (both the sender, and the addressee of these letters are philologists); process of graduate philologists' professional adaptation to the stagnating academic infrastructure in postrevolutionary Russia; the phenomenon of “academic avant-gardism” (in this case – “futuristic” texts created by academic philologists). The poetic experiments of V. P. Krasnogorskiy (collected in the Appendix) were also manifestations of this phenomenon.
