Abstract: In the article on the example of two works of modern Russian literature: the tale of M. Kharitonov «Day in February» (1976) and the novel of V. Sharov «Return to Egypt» (2013) is considered one of the strategies of modern literary process - updating images, motives and plots of Russian classics. The Image of N. V. Gogol and his literary themes become a field of reflection modern writers about the links between art and reality, the essence of creativity (Kharitonov); and the field of play, the place where the phantasmagoric the plot of the poem «Dead souls», reveal the mechanisms of the development of Russian history (Sharov).
