Abstract: In this article the hypothesis about the influence of Edgar Poe’s novel «The Man of the Crowd» upon the novel «The Night Roads» by Gayto Gazdanov is put forward. There is the correlation between the two texts in such features as the image of the inquisitive story-teller / observer / analyst, a set of objects for his analytical efforts (social-professional strata, the original hero), the key idea of the human heart mystery, the time and the place.
