Abstract: Polemics between the magazines «Sovremennik» and «Russkoye slovo» in 1860s, caused by the different estimation of I. S. Turgenev’s novel «Fathers and sons», is considered in the article. Materials of the observation are the articles by M. Antonovich and D. Pisarev, written about the novel. The subject of the research is the way of the statement of the text’s plot by literary critic. The retelling of the text is considered as a way of interpretation, allowing critic not only transform the author’s plot, appreciably changing it, but also put the personal plots into the plot of Turgenev’s novel, depending on the polemical object of the article. As a result, conceptually different novels are found in different aesthetic and ideological clusters, and it marks not only the difference of the magazines, but also a considerable redistribution of the literary priorities in 1860s.
