This article introduces into scholarly circulation M. A. Zenkevich’s “Notes in the Margins of Poets” – a series of essays, five of which are published for the first time. Among them are essays on the American poets Walt Whitman, William Cullen Bryant, and Edgar Allan Poe, as well as two brief notes on translations and poetry anthologies. In addition, the first publication of Zenkevich’s article on Ezra Pound discovered in another archival source is also included. The structure of “Notes in the Margins of Poets” is described, with a brief overview of its components. The published essays are considered against the backdrop of Zenkevich’s literary, translation, and editorial work from the 1920s to the 1960s. The author presents American poets through the prism of his own understanding of their role in the literary historical process and the significance of their works, describes the details of his translations, and compares them with the works of other translators. Anthologies of translations containing works of the aforementioned poets are compared. The article concludes that “Notes in the Margins of Poets”, in its entirety, and the sections published here devoted to American poets, constitutes a significant addition both to Zenkevich’s legacy as a poet, literary critic and translator, and to his biography. This is the second article published in this journal presenting new archival findings from Zenkevich’s unpublished papers.
